Granville Sentinel Wednesday, February 22, 2006 (Retyped) Elegantly restored, Granville’s The Sheldon Mansion serves again
The Sheldon Mansion, a Historic Inn, opened in August 2004, one month after owners Stephen and Marianne Lynch ex-changed wedding vows on the veranda. Most people in the Granville area remember the mansion at 48 North Street as the Emma Laing Stevens Hospital where they were born, had a broken bone set or received some stitches. Now the Sheldon Mansion serves the Granville area in a new way. The mansion has been restored to its original beauty of an era 100 years ago when the mansion was built in 1906 by Fredrick Sheldon, founder of Sheldon Slate. The Sheldon Mansion has 5 guest rooms, all with private baths, which are subtly themed after area locations. The most impressive is the Granville Suite with a private sitting room. The Eagle Bridge presents a Grandma Moses theme. The Champlain celebrates the lake. The Saratoga is named after Marianne’s hometown. The Arlington has a Norman Rockwell theme. Guests enjoy breakfast in the second floor solarium overlooking the village. They can also relax in the Sitting Room, formal Dining Room, Parlor, English Study, or along the sweeping Veranda. Steve and Marianne report that the Inn and the grounds are available for weddings and smaller indoor functions such as showers and business conferences. Steve Lynch, along with his dog Amanda, bought the mansion in April of 2002 with the hope of restoring the unique slate building as an inn. He met Marianne a month later and now the elegant inn is their beautiful home. Steve and Marianne love life in Granville and are very active in the community. Marianne and Steve are both members of the Granville Lions Club. Steve has served on the Granville Zoning Advisory Committee and is a director of the Granville Area Chamber of Commerce. Both of the Lynches feel strongly about community service and these feelings show in their careers over the past 25 years. Marianne is a Special Education teacher. Steve, a civil engineer, has served on a number of major projects for the public, is a member of a national task force for search and rescue, and recently became a Director at The Vermont Veteran’s Home to serve our veterans. Steve and Marianne enjoy meeting the variety of guests at their inn and sharing their lives’ experiences. Many are traveling through the area and have marveled at Granville’s museums, slate industry, and natural beauty. The inn often serves as extra bedrooms for family visitors for holidays, reunions, graduations and weddings. The Sheldon Mansion is a unique gem in the Village of Granville that has been saved and restored to once again serve the community in the elegant manner for which it was originally designed 100 years ago. The mansion has a unique telephone number. You can call 642-0000 for reservations for your special events.
